The Wednesday afternoon accident also claimed the life of Verde Schambaugh, 80, of Eunice and injured the mother of the two children. According to Lt. Brett Faulkner with the Eunice Police Department, the tragic sequence of events began when 1-year-old Laila Williamson stopped breathing at her home in Eunice. Her mother, Heather Williamson, 26, grabbed up the baby and her 8-year-old son Cade Williamson and attempted to rush the baby to Acadian Medical Center.

According to Faulkner, Williamson's vehicle, its emergency flashers blinking, was seen by a Eunice city marshal's deputy about 3:30 p.m. traveling east on U.S. Route 190 at a high rate of speed, weaving in and out of traffic. "She driving erratically. She almost caused several accidents," said Deputy Steven Moody with the marshal's office.
